A Good Reminder!
On a more serious note, this is a memorial for a welder’s helper that died right here in 1994. From what I've heard, when the construction of this pipe line was being done he had to go inside the 24” pipe a few feet to prep a weld. There was no air test done and no ventilation, after all it was only going to take him a minute or so to do what he needed to do. No one knew it at the time but the pipe had argon gas in it.
“Argon is colorless, odorless, tasteless and nontoxic in both its liquid and gaseous forms. Although argon is non-toxic, it does not satisfy the body's need for oxygen and is a simple asphyxiant.”
I know that I get tired of hearing “Safety/ Safety/ Safety” but I am glad that I work in such a safety orientated place so these things don’t happen like this any more. It’s not just about getting the job done; it’s about being able to go home to your family after getting the job done safely. I think this is a good reminder of that and although this memorial is way out in the middle of no where I think it’s a good thing for people to see.
